NHS vs Private ADHD Assessments

Healthcare Mental Health

What You Need to Know

When seeking an ADHD assessment for your child in the UK, families often choose between the NHS pathway

(including CAMHS neurodevelopmental services) and private assessments. Each has benefits and limitations.

🕐 Waiting Times

NHS assessments — especially through CAMHS neurodevelopmental teams — can involve long waiting lists. In many areas, waits of 12–24+ months are common due to demand and limited specialist availability.

Private assessments are usually much quicker, often offering appointments within weeks or a few months. However, even private clinics can have waits depending on demand.

🧠 CAMHS and NHS ADHD Assessments

On the NHS, ADHD assessments for children and young people are usually carried out by CAMHS neurodevelopmental teams or specialist Child Development Services. CAMHS will review referral information, send screening forms to parents and schools, and decide if a full diagnostic assessment is appropriate.

The assessment may include detailed history, questionnaires, observation, teacher and parent input, and discussion in a multidisciplinary team.

🏷️ NHS Right to Choose (England)

In England, you have a legal NHS “Right to Choose” an alternative NHS‑funded provider for ADHD assessment rather than waiting for your local service. This is still NHS care — you do not pay — and it can shorten the wait compared with local lists.

Your GP must make the referral, and you cannot use “Right to Choose” if you are already receiving NHS treatment for the same condition.
